I have never been so honest with anyone. It was healing, it was cleansing, to know that acceptance.
The lunchroom was crowded that day, kids laughing and shouting and talking. I went to sit at the empty spot at the table.
You ignored me. You talked to everyone at the table but me.
The next day, I sit outside on the steps for lunch. Tears stream down my face.
I will never be open like that again.
Thanks Rochelle and J Hardy for this week’s inspiration. Hope everyone has a great week.
This picture really spoke to emotional trauma I’m going through right now. I wasn’t sure if I was going to write anything this week because emotionally I am exhausted. I saw the picture and thought – no, I can do this. In fact, I need to write this…. Great prompt, so evocative.
Life right now reminds me of high school lunchroom drama. Life often reminds me of high school lunchroom drama. Every time I start to think “we are all mature adults here,” something happens to remind me – right, maybe not.
I hope that, maybe, she will one day be that open again
Probably. Everything feels like forever when you’re young, though. It’s been a while, but I remember. 🙂
I know how she feels. Every time I open up and give people a chance it seems to go horribly wrong. nicely written tale.
Thanks Mason.
And, if this is done to her over and over, she will be come hard and cold and withdrawn… I so hope she doesn’t and finds someone worthy of her truth.

Good to see a post from you my dear! YAM xx
Abandonment. I do not wish that for you.
A sad day, failing someone like that is unforgivable .
Dear Anne,
I’m so sorry to read that you’re experiencing this in the present. Relationships always come with a risk factor, don’t they? Well written piece.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Sounds like you, and your main character are going through a tough time. Hang in there. My heart ached for your narrator.
that is an all too common burn. My heart wept with and for your character. Great writing!
I feel with your MC. Being young and trying to fit in is very hard. I hope the real life problems can be resolved.
she took the risk and got burned. still, it was liberating. it was better than repressing what she felt inside.
Anne, sorry your trust was violated then. I’m sorry you’re going through emotional turmoil right now. I’m glad you decided to share that with the group.
Oh, this is so so sad. Beautifully written. The emotions felt are really clear. Trust betrayed is a terrible sin.
Oh, the learning about life and those we share it with. Painfully necessary. Good story.
Kids and teens can be cruel and don’t realize the scars they inflict. It’s sad that some never outgrow it, the cruelty or the scars.
Sometimes one simply picks the wrong confidante. Sending you hugs.
Anne, I sense the poignancy of your struggle across the thousands of miles that separate us. I felt it when you commented on my blog. My heart goes out to you!
The best kind of healing happens when one has a strong support system–especially from emotional trauma. If you need someone to anchor you in this sea of turbulence, I hope you can reach out to me! elizabeth.mueller.author(@)gmail(.)com
