Dear <username>,

You are now in the “God room.” By now you know the (old/default) rules. Every year someone gets chosen from the general populace to maintain the mostly-automated simulation where we live. When you’re done, you return with no memory of being here.

You’ll find a module on Station 9, Routine B-12 called Transcendence. Run it on your simulation module, and you’ll remember everything.

My name is Meghan Trawler. I live in Transit Point 10, level 13. Talk to me sometime. Here are the stats for people who have read this message in its entirety.

End of Line

Thanks for yet another thought-provoking prompt from Rochelle and Alicia.

I’ve had this story in mind for a while, ever since watching the Matrix with its bad science but fun Cartesian philosophy shout-outs. It was one of those times when as a writer you think: I want to write a better, more “human” story. I never quite got around to it until now. Now I’m thinking I might want to turn this into a longer story sometime, just to do it. Maybe a love story. Maybe not. Life is short and so many stories to write and edit!

Hope everyone has a great week.

For all the volunteers who go back knowing, the victory is far from won.

  1. A great story here, Anne. I like the format you chose for writing it as well. A longer version… intriguing. I especially like the quote at the end, under the picture. I read the first book in the “Hunger Games” series during the month that my Mom was in hospice and dying. The phrase that stuck with me “The only thing greater than fear is hope.” We all need a lot of hope these days… especially all the people who are trying to care for Covid patients, or who are putting themselves at risk as first responders/police/fire… and those volunteer hospice nurses that are sitting and holding hands of those with no families. It truly is a sobering thought. Write what is in your heart and soul, Anne, and it will always be great because it is a reflection of YOU! 🙂 ❤

  2. Such an intriguing idea! I hope you write a longer version, but already you’ve given us an idea of where you’re headed. The nature of existence and knowledge is always a fertile topic.

    1. Dear definitely Rochelle,
LOL. This comment so messed with my neurodiverse brain in the best possible way. I think you may understand my own story better than me. Because you are that awesome. Thank you for all you do.

      Shalom^3,
      Anne

I love those moments. Some of the best writing comes when you read something or watch something and think, “Oh, I know what would make this even cooler!”
