IWSG: May the 4th Be With You

Here in the U.S., this is a dark day for democracy and for women. I was actually having a rough time anyway, one of those times when I’m like okay done with all of this.

And now, I just want to say that today is a dark day for democracy and women.

If you don’t know why, if you’re not angry, then you’re not paying attention.

As a writer and a reader for the past few years, I keep thinking oh my gosh Handmaid’s Tale looking more and more believable by the moment. As a writer and a human person, people feel more polarized than ever. I spend time talking to people who believe differently than me, people with compassion or at least who are willing to speak. And then, one of my coworkers turns to me at work and is like the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. It’s on the news.

And I’m like but the opinion wasn’t supposed to be released until this summer. And then, oh no, it was just a leaked draft. A leaked draft.

That’s what we have come to now. And the “other side” is gleefully cackling. I had to drop out of a religious group that I was barely involved in anyway, where they have decided to spend a gleeful afternoon talking about the awesome news.

And meanwhile, I’m wondering what I would do if I suddenly woke up one morning and women can’t have jobs or bank accounts anymore and all fertile women must report for impregnation duty.

We say it can’t happen, but that is what people always say right before it does.

As a writer who was told “don’t get political” I’ma get political here. Ladies, we must not let this stand. We must not let this stand. We need to mobilize and stand together along with gents who believe that men and women are equal, and women don’t just exist to birth (preferably male) babies.

That will be all today. Totally off-topic, I know, but honestly, I was planning to skip this month, and now … this is all I have in me to talk about.

Hope everyone has a great May. This too shall pass.
