This is the first Wednesday of the month, and that means IWSG Day, the day when all of us insecure writers get together and talk about writing.
March 3 (optional) question – Everyone has a favorite genre or genres to write. But what about your reading preferences? Do you read widely or only within the genre(s) you create stories for? What motivates your reading choice?
This reminds me of the snarky fantasy author response to the old saying that you should only write what you know. I am not a unicorn (probably). Or a hobbit OR stuck in the relentless cycle of Norse mythology.
As for my alleged “fantasy novel addiction,” yes, I may have a problem. It’s true that my current pile contains exactly three books: urban fantasy, juvenile fantasy, and Victorian era fantasy. Someone looking at the books I’m reading might think – oh, you only read fantasy, huh?
You’ve caught me at an embarrassing moment, but, FYI, I also read nonfiction, sci fi, and … other things. (Quick, what other genres exist?)
Yes, I read a lot of fantasy novels. It’s true. Maybe because I really enjoy reading them. Maybe because that is what my Fae Overlords force me to read. Who knows? Knowing this truth about myself feels like looking through my library “reading history” to see what important, thought-provoking books I’ve read lately. And my last ten checkouts were all Hallmark movies. Haha. Not that this ever happens.
I am not a Unicorn. Or, maybe I’m like Dirk Gently from the Douglas Adam series. If you deny being something often enough, people start to wonder if you really are That Thing. If you tell them exactly what you are, they will never believe you.
In answer to the original question about what kind of books I like to read. Let’s be clear here. One last time. I am. Not. A. Unicorn. I just read a lot of fantasy novels. Allegedly. (A lot of fantasy novels wind up in my house, and someone here appears to be reading them. And, I live alone.)
What are you reading? Is it 2022 yet where you are? Much later or much, much earlier? How is it there? May I visit? I have cookies.
