So it’s the first Wednesday of the month and that means IWSG Day and I completely forgot due to … I really don’t have a good excuse, except I’ve been busy. Writing-wise, I’ve been doing a lot of editing and backstory. Among other hopefully more productive things, I dug the first novel I ever wrote out of the trashbin of history and have been giving it a look over.
One of the things that strikes me is that when I first started writing I had much less skill but a lot more energy. I spent a lot of time working on details and a lot of energy taking chances, writing the kind of story I know better(?) than to take on now. It’s been an interesting experience.
So that’s what I have to say this month. Have you ever dug an old piece of writing out of the past? Has it ever made you see how you’ve grown (or at least changed…) as a writer?
Hope everyone has a great September!
I’m sure there are stylistic differences, but for me, the really huge thing is moving from long, meandering stories for my own amusement to coherent, well edited things with a beginning, middle and end.
That is so true, although for me I think it can also be the reverse. It seems like when I was younger I was better at writing a *story* where now I overthink things and ramble more.
Glad you are keeping busy. I have pulled out old pieces…it makes me happy to see my growth.
Thanks Liza.
Yes! I’ve been digging up a lot of my old pieces. It’s very interesting! I find myself saying, ‘huh… that’s pretty cool. I didn’t realize that…’ P.S. You’ve been nominated. ❤ You're in my prayers Anne.

Thanks so much for that Tina! I’ve been kind of ignoring my blog, but you’ve inspired me to at least try to come back and do something.
I have less energy than I used to, but I’m older than I used to be. I tend to have spurts of creativity combined with energy–they seem to come sporadically in waves. When I look at my writing from my college days it often seems better than my writing now–maybe it just sounds more academic..
